In the beautiful setting of Nova Kraljevica Castle, the first gastro competition – the Sweet challenge for making the best mendulača, a traditional dessert from Šmrika was held, proving that our cherished local specialty is far from forgotten!
This unique event brought together ten participants, all passionate about homemade recipes. Among them were both experienced cooks and those who, for the first time, dared to showcase their culinary skills. It was precisely the nuances in preparation and technique that made the key difference among the submitted desserts.
The expert jury consisted of Ksenija Bobuš, guardian of the original mendulača recipe from Šmrika; Antonia Mikac, a chef known for her gastro brand Tonkine fritule; and Jelena Mateševac Skočilić, Director of the Kraljevica Tourist Board. Their main task was to evaluate taste and overall quality, texture and aroma, appearance and presentation, as well as the overall impression. Special emphasis was placed on respecting tradition and the authenticity of the recipe, while effort and creativity in presentation were particularly praised.
The title of best mendulača and first place was awarded to Susanne Lucić from Šmrika. Second place went to Davor Skočilić, the only male contestant, while third place was won by Ljiljana M. Ferenčić.
This gastro challenge once again confirmed that Kraljevica nurtures a rich culinary heritage and demonstrated strong potential for developing events that bring the community together, promote local flavours, and create memorable experiences of our region.
We hope this sweet challenge will become a new Easter tradition and contribute to bringing mendulača back into the homes of the local community and beyond.
