On Saturday, September 20, 2025, a large-scale environmental cleanup of the seabed and coastline of the Tihi kanal took place, organized by the Adria Diving Club from Kraljevica, and hosted by the Jastog Šmrika Fishing Sports Club.
The initiative was held under the patronage of the City of Kraljevica and with the logistical support of the County Port Authority Bakar – Kraljevica – Kostrena. The event brought together more than 60 divers and volunteers on land and in boats, including members of various associations, local fishermen, and individuals from the community.
Action overview
The main gathering point was the Črišnjeva marina, where participants registered and received instructions from the organizers before heading out to pre-determined cleanup sites within the Tihi kanal.
Cleanup activities were carried out in the Črišnjeva marina itself, the Dumboka marina, and Cape Vošćica on the Krk island side of the channel.
Divers collected waste from the seabed into jumbo bags, which were then brought to the surface using lift bags and extracted from the sea with the help of a port crane.
Approximately 10 cubic meters of waste were collected during the action, including boat parts, car tires, steel structures, old buoys and fishing nets, glass bottles, and a large amount of plastic.
All collected waste was properly disposed of in accordance with current regulations, thanks to the support of the City of Kraljevica.
Community synergy and support
This initiative once again demonstrated how much teamwork and experience can contribute to environmental protection. Long-standing collaboration between divers from Kraljevica, local fishermen from Šmrika, and the Port Authority resulted in a highly efficient and effective cleanup.
After the successful operation, participants gathered for a shared lunch and began discussing future actions – which, judging by the enthusiasm, are sure to follow. Of particular note is the growing involvement and awareness among local residents, fishermen, and boat owners, who selflessly offered their support to the organizers.
